NEXT TRAINING: TBA, Room 156 North Hall

Coordinator: Dr. Catherine J. Massey, Department of Psychology, 724-738-2532

Safe Zone is a program designed to improve visibility and support to the LGBT campus community. The Safe Zone symbol is a message to LGBTQ students and colleagues that a campus community member has participated in Safe Zone training and is committed to increasing his/her knowledge of and sensitivity to LGBT issues.  The symbol allows campus community members to identify program members and know that they can speak freely with these individuals about issues, including sexual orientation and gender identity, which may affect their academic success or job satisfaction. The mission of Safe Zone and its members is to provide support and resources, including referrals, to LGBTQ members in need of assistance. It is not designed and will not be used to provide counseling or therapy to those who use Safe Zone. Because the Safe Zone program also strives to improve the campus climate for LGBT individuals, the symbol also means that Safe Zone members will challenge homophobic and heterosexist comments or behaviors in an educational and informative manner.
