Rangers will learn about terrorism, search and seizure.
SRU heads statewide park-manager law enforcement training
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. Slippery Rock Universitys department of parks and recreation has received a $46,135 grant to lead three weeks of park law enforcement training for more than 20 state-park managers from across Pennsylvania.
The sessions covering terrorism, search and seizure, accident investigation, controlled substances and more began Monday and will run through March 13 at Preston Environmental Center at Camp Bucoco on Route 8 near the University.
Well be covering topics and current issues that are considered critical components of local, state and national park law enforcement training. Park rangers will be involved in role-playing, group activities and lectures, said John Lisco, associate professor of parks and recreation/environmental education, one of the instructors. Its a natural fit for our department because SRU offers a park ranger law enforcement training program.
The grant is from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of State Parks. Lisco and Randall Pitstick, SRU assistant professor of parks and recreation/environmental education, applied for the grant. Amber Clement, a 2004 and 2006 SRU alumnus, is coordinating the project.
The training will allow park managers to gain knowledge of and identify with the importance of law enforcement in his/her state park, Lisco said. Through this grant, SRUs parks and recreation department and Pennsylvanias DCNR will continue to strengthen their relationship which will benefit SRU in terms of recruitment/career placement and the agency in terms of attracting quality SRU students to DCNR.
Sixteen professional instructors, including SRUs Lisco and Pitstick, will teach the courses. Lisco will teach Constitutional law, the American legal system, foundations of the criminal justice system, report writing, DUI, patrol procedures and criminal and civil liability. Pitstick will teach visitor services, courtroom procedures and mock trail.
We are training and educating the next generation of park managers in the state of Pennsylvania, Lisco said.
Camp Bucoco, owned by the Moraine Trails Council, Boy Scouts of America, is a multi-purpose educational center that serves as the basis for many environmental programs. The Boy Scouts use the site for camps, and the cabins and campsites remain open for rentals year-round.
