Going, going, green

SRU students organize first green bike, music festival for April 5

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. While doing something for the environment once meant just recycling newspapers or plastics, Slippery Rock University students are taking greening to a new level by making it part of their everyday life including transportation. To help spread the word about the value of greening, several campus groups have come together to organize the Universitys first Leave It Green Bike and Music Festival on April 5.

            The festival will promote bicycling as an alternative to reliance on emission-producing automobiles. A great option, organizers say, especially at a time when some experts predict gasoline prices could reach $4 a gallon.

            The festival will include workshops on bicycle commuting, a campus bike ride, a bike repair clinic, bicycle giveaways, live music and camping.  The University is making the Ski Lodge grounds available for open camping from Saturday to Friday to promote greening.

            The camp-out is our invitation to students and the community to get involved, said Steve Roberts, SRU coordinator of Outdoor Adventures and an advocate to many of the green initiatives on campus and a festival organizer. Were trying to turn people on to getting out of their cars, living the healthy lifestyle and starting to commute on bikes to get the congestion out of our parking lots and reduce dependence on petroleum.

            Festival activities will include:

  • 1 p.m., bike repair clinic;
  • 2 p.m., campus bike ride and technique clinic for commuting and mountain biking;
  • 3 p.m., a green bike and green lifestyles workshop;
  • 4 p.m.,  concert by Brad Yoder and Jason Rafalak; bike-giveaway during concert;
  • 5:30 p.m., performance by Dali Rocket, an acoustic duo from East Lansing, Mich.;
  • 6:30 p.m. concert by Unified Theory and jam session; and
  • 7 p.m. - camp out begins.

            The festival is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Film Institute, which provided a grant, and was organized by Outdoor Adventures, the Outing Club, Cycling Club, The Green Fund, The Green Bike Initiative and leaveitgreen.org
