General Botany
Biology 201
Instructors: Jerry G. Chmielewski ,
Objectives: A laboratory and lecture course that emphasizes basic biochemical, morphological, and physiological aspects of plant biology as they relate to evolution. One section of this course is offered in each of the fall and spring semesters.
Prerequisites: General Biology (Biol 101) or Principles of Biology (Biol 104)
Credit Value: 4
Contact Time: Three 50 minute lectures and one 3 hour laboratory per week.
Outcomes: Upon the successful completion of this course a student should be able to:
- relate those characteristics which differentiate among the organisms included in the Divisions Acrasiomycota, Myxomycota, Chydridioprotista, Ooprotista, Zygomycota, Dikaryomycota, (Phylum) Cyanobacteria, Rhodoprotista, Euglenoprotista, Dinoprotista, Bacillarioprotista, Chrysoprotista, Phaeoprotista, Chloroprotista, Hepatophyta, Anthocerotophyta, Bryophyta, Psilophyta, Lycophyta, Equisetophyta, Pteridophyta, Pteridospermophyta, Cycadophyta, Ginkgophyta, Coniferophyta, Cycadeoideophyta, Gnetophyta, and Magnoliophyta
- differentiate among the life cycles of respective organisms
- define those adaptations which allow the respective organisms to occupy those habitats in which they typically occur
- reconstruct the floristic past, that is, relate organismal dominance with respective geologic time
Assessment:
- Term tests: Tests will be administered during the semester.
- Laboratory examinations: Three laboratory practical examinations will be administered during the semester.
- Term paper: This paper will be used to meet the writing across the curriculum requirement (Intensive Writing) of the course. A list of term paper topics will be distributed early in the semester.
- Final examination: comprehensive
- NOTE: Assessment format and weighting may vary between instructors.
