This office works directly with faculty, administrators, and students, as well as coordinating services with local and regional community agencies.  The Health Promotion Office is located in the Student Health Center in Rhoads Halls.  For more information, please contact the Health Promotion Coordinator, Renee Bateman, at 724-738-4206.

HOPE - Healthy Outreach Through Peer Education
"Issue Oriented Programs FOR Students BY Students"

The HOPE Program at Slippery Rock University presents important health-related information to college students on a variety of issues, including alcohol abuse, safer sex, and stress.  Trained peer educators develop and present programs that are designed to be highly informative and interactive.  HOPE programs are available to any student classroom, group, or organization.  Programs can be scheduled by calling 738-4888 at least two weeks in advance.  In addition to the following programs, HOPE peer educators design outreach activities during “awareness weeks & months.”

HOPE Programs:

Sex, Drugs, and Pop Culture
This program uses a jeopardy like format to pass important information to the audience. Various health issues are addressed along with pop-culture trivia.

Safer Than Sorry
It is estimated that one in five college students has or will develop a STI.  Learn behaviors to reduce transmission of sexually transmitted infections and ways to reduce the risk of unintended pregnancy in this interactive program.

Beers, Cheers, and Fears
This highly informative program will describe the effects of alcohol on the body and introduce students to the dangers of high-risk drinking.  Students will be provided with important referral sources for alcohol-related situations.

Reality Check
Do men and women really think differently? Do our attitudes and beliefs about each other interfere with the way we communicate and interact with one another?   Explore these issues and more in this "no holds barred" interactive discussion.

HIV a Nice Day
This interactive program reviews HIV & AIDS and allows students to identify HIV transmission risks.  Students will also be able to participate in the visualization of an HIV antibody test.

Bed Bugs
STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections) are spread more easily than most students think.  Learn about Hepatitis, HPV, Herpes, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and more in this informative discussion.  Avoid the bed bugs!

The Calming Effect
You may be more stressed out than you think! Learn the symptoms of both types of stress, plus easy and economical ways for college students to reduce their stress in every day life.  This interactive program is designed for you to be more relaxed when you leave.  Note: Host must provide a CD player

The Health Challenge
This interactive program uses a game show format to relay important facts about alcohol, drugs, sexually transmitted infections, and other health issues.  The audience is split into teams to compete for the highest score.

Health and Wellness Resources

A variety of health-related brochures, videos, pamphlets, and articles are available for student, faculty, and staff use.  These resources include information on a wide range of issues and are available at no charge.  They can be obtained through the Health Promotion Office in the Student Health Center.
