The Office of Environmental Health
& Safety is responsible for Slippery Rock University's
Recycling Program. Since its inception in 1989 the Slippery Rock
University Recycling Program has been committed to making SRU a
cleaner and more environmentally friendly campus for everyone.
During the past nine years the Recycling Program has diverted over
3.6 million pounds of recyclable material from the university waste
stream.
As a result of these efforts the
Recycling Program has received the Pennsylvania Waste Watchers
Award the past two years for the institutional recycling collection
program category. This annual award started in 1998 is sponsored by
the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP),
Public Recycling Officials of Pennsylvania (PROP), and Pennsylvania
Waste Industries Association (PWIA) to help encourage recycling
statewide. Slippery Rock University is one of five colleges across
the state to receive the award including one of two schools in the
State System of Higher Education. It is the only school besides
Penn State to receive it two years in a row.
The success of the SRU Recycling
Program is just one example of the many successful environmental
programs at the university that exemplify the university's
commitment to the environment as stated in its mission statement.
Through the cooperation of students, faculty, and staff the goal of
the recycling program is to continue to increase the recycling
effort on campus, and to make the program more efficient and
convenient for everyone.
The SRU Recycling Program encourages
any suggestions or comments that may help achieve these goals in
order to continue the university's commitment to a healthier
environment. For more information on the university's recycling
program, you can contact the Office of Environmental Health &
Safety at 724-738-2465.
