Dr. Maya Angelou is a remarkable Renaissance woman who is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature. During her visit to Slippery Rock University, Dr. Angelou 
captivated the audience with her wit, wisdom and words. During her performance, Dr. Angelou “gifted” this poem “A Brave and Startling Truth” to Slippery Rock University, and asked that it be posted on our Website so that it could be shared with all. We are honored to do so. This poem, first read by Maya Angelou at the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, expresses her hope for peace and a powerful message that “…we…have the power to fashion a climate where every man and woman can live freely.”
