Rock cheerleading squad earns national runner-up honors

ORLANDO, Fla. – Slippery Rock University's All Girl cheerleading squad claimed a runner-up finish in the 2012 Universal Cheerleaders Association and Universal Dance Association College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship competition earlier this month at Walt Disney World Resort.

The University of West Georgia won the Division II national championship. Southern Connecticut State University was the third-place team, followed in order by Avila University, Misericordia University, College of New Jersey, Kutztown University, Concord University and University of Scranton.

SRU won the Division II All Girl national championship in 2010, finished second in the 2011 competition and placed fifth in the 2009 national competition.

The Rock's coed cheerleading squad, which did not compete in the 2012 event, finished second in 2010, third in 2009 and fourth in 2011.

Gemma Fotia is the squad’s adviser.
