SRU wellness programs promote fitness

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University is launching three wellness programs to help you meet your New Year's wellness resolution - a 10,000 Step Challenge, Zumba classes and a Mindfulness Mediation class.

The programs build on the University's success in promoting healthy lifestyles, most recently illustrated by a top 100 healthy workplaces in the country ranking.

"We have made a lot of progress toward wellness education and implementation, and we are continuing to move forward," said Kim Smith, associate professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences. "These programs offer convenient options for faculty, administrators and staff."

The 12-week, 10,000 Step Challenge is a pedometer-based walking program. This year's version features an initiative called "Coming Home," which supports military personnel in Afghanistan.

Smith said 10,000 Step participants would be organized into teams that will work together to walk 7,000 miles, the distance between Old Main and Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Registration is 12:30 to 2 p.m. Jan. 30, and noon to 2 p.m. Jan. 31, in Morrow Field House. Walkers may use their own pedometer of buy one for $8. Free walking logs, incentives and Highmark Healthy U points are available.

The free, "Party Yourself into Shape" Zumba class will be offered every Monday from 4:45-5:45 p.m., in 225 Patterson Hall. Classes begin Feb. 3 and are open to faculty, staff, administrators and spouses, Smith said.

Smith and Sue Herman, SRU assistant professor of exercise and rehabilitative sciences, will teach the class. They are licensed Zumba instructors.

Mindfulness Meditation will be offered every Friday from 12:10-12:50 p.m., in 225 Patterson Hall. The sessions begin Feb. 7 and run through April 18.

Carol Holland, director of the SRU Counseling Center, is the instructor. Meditation promotes stress and depression reduction, improved immune function and quality of life.
