’86 alumna earns art educator award

Cynthia Blackwell, a 1986 Slippery Rock University art education graduate, has been named the 2011 Outstanding Middle Level Art Educator by the Pennsylvania Art Education Association.

Blackwell, the visual arts educator for middle school students at the Pittsburgh Gifted Center, received the award for her networking abilities and commitment to enhancing art education for Pittsburgh area school children. She frequently participates in workshops at the Andy Warhol Museum and leads student field trips to art museums.

“Cynthia Blackwell is a teacher who inspires selfless giving of one’s talents, time and treasure to promote student achievement and accomplishment,” said Adrienne Heinrich of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, which works with Blackwell.

Blackwell recently traveled to Brazil on a Fulbright-Hays group project to develop lesson plans about the intersection of art and society.
