SRU offers Feb. 16 jazz concert

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Latin Jazz Ensemble will present a high-energy Latin jazz concert at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 16 in SRU’s Sheehy Theatre in the Maltby Center. The 10-student ensemble will perform “Palmas,” “Guajira Dubois,” “Tema Para Marissa” and other Latin numbers.
Jason Kush, SRU instructor of music, will conduct. Victor Barranco, a trombonist with the U.S. Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, will be the featured soloist.
“It’s going to be a relative short concert, but very, very high energy and high volume,” Kush said.
Latin jazz combines jazz with Latin-American rhythms. Dizzy Gillespie was a pioneer. Kush formed SRU’s Latin Jazz Ensemble in 2010.
