Robert Ogoreuc, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of physical education, has been named Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Ogoreuc was recognized for his contribution to physical education knowledge and teaching and his leadership in aquatics education and water safety training. He was nominated by a PSAHPERD member and chosen by the awards committee.
“I am humbled and honored to be chosen for this award,” Ogoreuc said. “It’s not only a personal milestone, but I’m pleased that it will bring more attention to the important work being done at Slippery Rock University in the field of aquatics.”
Award winners must conduct a quality physical education program and utilize teaching methods and to provide innovative learning opportunities. Award winners must also serve as positive role models epitomizing personal health and fitness, sportsmanship and sensitive to the needs of students.
Ogoreuc, who received his master’s degree in physical education from SRU in 1996, was the driving force in the development of SRU’s aquatics minor and is actively involved in teaching open water rescue courses with the New Jersey State Police.
In 2005 and 2010, Aquatics International Magazine named him one of the 25 most powerful people in aquatics. The American Red Cross recruited Ogoreuc to serve as an adviser when it revised its water safety instructors program in 2004. He also assisted the American Red Cross with its latest revision for the lifeguard program released in 2012.
Ogoreuc joined SRU in 1996 and teaches “Aquatic Fundamentals,” “Aquatic Leadership” and “Water Safety Instruction.”
