SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Online Rocket, Slippery Rock University's online student newspaper, has been awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, making it one of five top online newspapers in the nation.
The award is part of the association's annual yearbook and digital media awards competition. The certificate will be presented at the 31st Annual Gold Circle Awards Program.
Since 1984, CSPA has recognized outstanding achievement in both verbal and visual categories for newspapers, magazines and yearbooks. Digital media categories were added in 2009.
The awards competition attracted 4,279 entries produced by students at colleges, universities and secondary schools throughout the United States.
The Online Rocket was the only website newspaper not affiliated with a daily newspaper with full-time paid staff members.
The current Online Rocket is a joint effort of the entire staff, which can post stories and photos to the online edition.

Also honored in the category were: The Daily Pennsylvanian at the University of Pennsylvania; The Baylor Lariat, at Baylor University; The Shorthorn at the University of Texas of Arlington; and idsnews.com at Indiana University, Bloomington.
