SRU University Public Relations wins six CUPPIES

CUPRAP, the Association of Communicators in Education, has awarded the Slippery Rock University University Public Relation's Office six CUPPIES, its annual design, writing and publication awards for recent projects.
SRU will receive a Silver and five Bronze CUPPIES March 13 as part of CUPRAP's three-days annual professional development conference in Hershey.
The Silver CUPPIE will be presented in the public relations/media relations competition feature article category for "Nifty at 50: Campus Radio Station Celebrates Legacy," which was published as the cover story in the fall 2012 edition of The ROCK magazine.
"Stealth Fighter," a feature article profiling Robert Stevens, a 1976 SRU graduate who serves as chairman of Lockheed Martin Corp., a global security and aerospace company with $47 billion in annual sales, won a Bronze CUPPIE The article was published as the cover story in the spring 2013 issue of the University magazine.
Gordon Ovenshine, senior writer in the University Public Relations Office, and magazine editor, authored both articles.
"It is certainly gratifying to see the articles praised. They were both fun articles to write and both were well received by our readers," Ovenshine said.
The department also scored a Bronze CUPPIE in the overall magazine category for three issues of
The Rock: Fall 2012 and Winter and Spring 2013.
The magazine CUPPIE recognized the work of Sandra Busch, publications manager, who designs the 44-page magazine, and PR staff writers, editors and photographers.
SRU also won three Bronze medals in the poster category, bringing home awards for their "Earth Days 2013," "Dance in India" and "Black History Month" entries.
Busch was responsible for the "Black History Month" poster design, while Aaron Moore, former graphic designer, was responsible for the "Dance in India" and "Earth Days" posters.
"We turn out a lot of really exciting and interesting posters and to have these three recognized by professionals in the design field is flattering," Busch said. "Our campus always has a lot going on, and the design staff works hard to find ways to help engage and inform the campus community through posters so they are aware of upcoming events and will participate. We think these awards show we are helping get the message out in a quality away."
More than 300 entries were submitted for this year's CUPPIE Awards
The CUPPIES came on the heels of the University Public Relations Office winning five top awards, including two Gold awards and three Silver awards, in the national 2013 Collegiate Advertising Awards Program.
The staff scored Gold honors for its Wellness logo design and "Dance in India" poster, and Silver medals for its Kaleidoscope booklet, the "Rockin' on the Ranch Sunset Serenade" event invitation and for the "Strategic Plan Annual Report."
