NEW ORLEANS – Three Slippery Rock University student athletes and the entire SRU men's cross country team have been honored for their academic and athletic achievements by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, which presented them All-Academic team and individual awards.
In order for a team to be eligible for All-Academic honors the squad must maintain a collective grade point average of 3.0 or above and post a score at the NCAA Regional Championship meet.
Individuals honors went to: Travis Arrigoni, a physical education major from Canonsburg; Michael Beegle, a physical therapy major from Gettysburg; and Eric Geddis, a business major from Cranberry Township. All were named to the Division II All-Academic squad.
In order to be eligible for the individual All-Academic honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or above and must finish in the top 30 percent of all finishers at the NCAA Regional Championships.
SRU finished the 2012 fall semester with a team GPA of 3.49, the second best in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference behind only Gannon (3.58). The Rock was one of the best teams in the region last fall, placing fourth at the regional meet.
SRU was one of only two men's teams in the region to place all five scorers in the top-25 to earn All-Region honors at the Regional Championships.
All three of SRU All-Academic runners placed in the top-27 out of 153 runners at the regional meet. Geddis earned All-Region honors with an 18th-place finish. Arrigoni also earned All-Region honors with a 22nd-place finish and Beegle had a 27th-place finish.
