SRU hosts 'Shale Summit III'

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University is teaming with the Grove City Area Chamber of Commerce, the Butler County Chamber of Commerce and WISR/WBUT radio to sponsor "Shale Summit III" from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., March 19, in the University's Smith Student Center. The event will give local business the chance to learn more about the needs of the shale industry.

"This will be a great business-to-business opportunity for anyone in the region to showcase their services and products to others involved in the industry," said Kurt Schimmel, dean of SRU's College of Business, Information and Social Sciences.

"The event is being billed as a 'Utica and Marcellus Informational Trade Show,'" he said. "We will have the opportunity to conference, network and showcase business opportunities in western Pennsylvania's energy sector. It will also be a chance to further discussion to help continue efforts to educate residents and professionals on the benefits of both Utica and Marcellus shale exploration in our region."

Richard Grimm, associate professor in SRU's School of Business, will lecture on the economic impact of the drilling. Angela Bernardo, assistant professor of safety management, will discuss occupational safety. John Golden, instructor in the School of Business, will lecture on personal finance.

Anyone interested joining the show, which includes exhibition booth space and radio promotions, should call either of the chambers.

SRU's School of Business has presented a number of shale-related lectures and panel discussions as part of its continuing "Success Starts Here" series.

Those lectures have pointed to the vast quantities of natural gas available from the underground shale deposits and the large number of employment opportunities the drilling and gas distribution will bring to the region and the commonwealth. The exploration also brings substantial funds to the region in lease agreements with property owners on and near drilling sites.

A number of breakout sessions are planned as part of the day's program.
