SRU graduate earns prestigious dance teaching post

Jessica Madden, a 2012 Slippery Rock University dance and elementary education graduate, has been hired by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago to teach jazz dance to students' ages 7-11. She will begin teaching musical theatre this spring.

Madden attributed her success to the training she received at SRU.

"In my Hubbard Street Dance Chicago interview, the moment I started talking about my philosophy of teaching the whole child and not just teaching movement, which grew out of the training I received in my teaching of dance class at Slippery Rock University, I could tell that I was probably going to get the job," she said.

Madden said she has been asked assist with the company's Movement as Partnership Program, which sends dance educators into local schools to lead dance lessons.

"Hubbard is a powerful force for both arts culture and education in the city of Chicago and the world," Madden said.

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, founded 35 years ago, tours dancers year-round and has staged performances in 44 states and 19 countries.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university.
