SRU PR staff nabs national Higher Education Marketing awards

A poster titled “Want to Change the World?” promoting a Slippery Rock University political science degree, and the University’s viewbook, designed to attract potential students to campus have earned honors from the Higher Education Marketing Report.

The honors are part of the 26th Annual Educational Advertising Awards program. More than 2,600 entries were received from more than 1,000 U.S. and international colleges, universities and secondary schools.

Aaron Moore, graphic designer, earned a sliver for his horizontal poster that showed how current students plan to make use of their political science degree after graduation.

Sandy Busch, publications manager, and Gordon Ovenshine, senior writer in the University Public Relations Office, received a merit award for the University’s 28-page, full-color recruitment piece that focuses on academic and leadership opportunities available to those who enroll at SRU.

The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest education advertising awards competition in the country. Judges included a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing and advertising professionals and editorial board members from the Marketing Report.

“It is truly inspiring to be recognized by your peers,” Busch said. “Our recruitment materials are very important to the University, and we take them very seriously. We strive to design publications that students – and their parents and school counselors – will want to look at and read. We have to spotlight the University and its programs by focusing on subjects high school students are interested in. The brochures must be attractive, colorful, well-written, informative and honest, so it is nice to know others think we have hit the mark.”

“The political science poster was a challenge, because we wanted to show the history of political science while also drawing attention to current student interests,” Moore said. “We elected to use student testimonials to demonstrate how students think a political science major will benefit them in the future. We had great student quotes to work with and the poster was ffective in getting the message out.”

“To have two of our marketing pieces selected for awards is quite an accomplishment and again demonstrates the quality of work our staff delivers,” said Rita Abent, executive director of University Public Relations. “These awards are especially significant because we were competing against advertising agencies as well as in-house university staffs from across the United States and throughout the world. ”

The Higher Education Marketing Report is a monthly publication read by marketers at colleges and universities across the U.S.

The department recently won three awards from CUPRAP – The Association of Communicators in Education, and a CASE award for the development of the University’s budget Web site.
