SRU earns College of Distinction honor
Slippery Rock University has been selected as a College of Distinction for its exemplary commitment to supporting engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes.
SRU is the only public university included among the 14 Pennsylvania colleges and universities recognized by Student Horizons, the Austin, Texas-based corporation that runs the program.
“We are certainly honored to be among the chosen universities for the College of Distinction program – it clearly puts us in some very good company,” said Robert Smith, SRU president. “Slippery Rock University has long prided itself on providing students with a comprehensive learning experience that combines academic instruction and hands-on learning opportunities and for the quality education offered by our faculty. Anyone who has been to our campus quickly recognizes SRU’s strong community spirit and our focus on successful outcomes. Our program was a perfect fit for the College of Distinction recognition.”
“Colleges of Distinction is an online college guide for students, parents and counselors. The service focuses on colleges where students can go to learn, to grow and to succeed. Colleges of Distinction’s single mission is to help attract the best and the brightest to its consortium,” said Wesley Creel, president. “The recognition carries weight to prospective students and their families. The selection is based on the value of the education and the experiences they provide, not on selection rates, or the extent of their research funding. Being a COD school lets students and their parents know a school is dedicated to providing a quality education.”
The selection is based on the opinions of guidance counselors, educators and admissions professionals.
“Schools selected as Colleges of Distinction create well-rounded graduates and are among the very best in the country,” said Tyson Schritter, COD executive editor. “While each school is one-of-a-kind, they all share a common theme: They are all a great place to get an education.”
In order to qualify, Slippery Rock University was required to demonstrate excellence in each of the four distinctions:
- Engaged Students – The college attracts students who have a healthy range of academic and non-academic interests, and demonstrates a tangible commitment to keeping them interested and involved in their education.
- Great Teaching – The college encourages faculty to be great teachers, not just researchers or consultants. It makes little or no use of graduate student “teaching assistants,” and students are always people, never numbers, to their professors.
- Vibrant Communities – The college is an interesting and exciting residential community, offering many opportunities for co-curricular involvement and leadership development.
- Successful Outcomes – The college has an excellent placement record for employment and advanced study. Alumni are satisfied with their experiences.
Featured schools take a holistic approach to admissions, consistently excel in providing undergraduate education and have a truly national reputation, COD officials said.
