Rock establishes Dave Labor Invitational
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University track and field teams will honor the memory of former assistant coach Dave Labor with the inaugural Dave Labor Invitational and the launch of the Dave Labor Memorial Fund.
“Dave was an instrumental part of this program for many years, and we felt like we needed to do something special to honor him,” said head coach John Papa.
Labor died of cancer last fall. He was an assistant with The Rock program for 17 years and worked primarily with the sprints, hurdles and relays.
The Dave Labor Invitational will replace the SRU Invitational and will be schedule each spring at the Bill Lennox Track inside Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
The inaugural event is April 14 and will feature a special noon ceremony and tribute to Labor.
During the presentation, a commemorative plaque will be unveiled featuring Labor’s photo, a list of his accomplishments and the names of all 80 athletes that claimed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles under his tutelage. The plaque will have additional space for future PSAC champions in the sprints, hurdles and relays and will be permanently displayed outside the Track and Field Offices in Morrow Field House.
The Dave Labor Memorial Fund will help offset cost of the plaque and meet annual expenses for the invitational. Individuals donating a minimum of $25 to the fund will receive a three-inch, commemorative Dave Labor Medal. All SRU track and field alumni and all of Labor's former student-athletes are invited to the ceremony.
Donations are being accepted by check, payable to the Dave Labor Memorial Fund, in care of John Papa, Morrow Field House, Slippery Rock University, 1 Morrow Way, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
