Children’s Day offers more than meets the ear
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The sound of harmonicas, children’s entertainer Hal Walker and other fun activities will fill the air during Slippery Rock University’s April 21 Children’s Day, which is the premier family event of SRU’s April 15-29 Kaleidoscope Arts Festival.
Children’s Day will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in front of SRU’s Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center.
Walker, a singer-songwriter with baritone voice, will perform with fifth-graders from Slippery Rock Area Elementary School. They will present the “Hal Walker Stick Dance.” Other activities will include arts and crafts, face painting, dance and balloon animals. Food will be available.
“This Children’s Day is really Kaleidoscope offering art in the community,” said Colleen Reilly, SRU assistant professor of theatre and arts festival director. “What we are doing is recognizing that everyone has the potential to be an artist, so we are offering events that bring out participants’ ability.”
Walker, from Kent, Ohio, will lead a “We Want More Harmonicas” rally at 2 p.m. Participants can bring their own harmonica or purchase one on site for $5.
Walker sings songs that celebrate community, diversity and the creative process and plays a number of unusual instruments, including a bamboo mouth organ.
Walker will also present a concert at 2 p.m., April 22, at Ginger Hill Unitarian Church in Slippery Rock. The suggested donation at the church is $5.
Guest artist Brian Harper, assistant professor of fine art at Indiana University/Southeast, will lead a “Walking Wall” project during Children’s Day. Children will get the opportunity to imprint their footprints into the ceramic wall.
SRU launched Kaleidoscope 11 years ago to bring free and reduced-cost arts programming to underserved communities. The April 15-29 festival offers programming for all audiences, including a Bob Dylan tribute presentation, plays, Taiko drummers from Japan, an outdoor sculpture exhibition and orchestra and wind ensemble concerts.
Kaleidoscope tickets for shows and concerts will be available at the door or at the University Union Information Desk. The complete schedule of events is at: http://www.sru.edu/academics/colleges/chfpa/kaleidoscope/Pages/ScheduleofEvents.aspx.
