Bailey Library offers week of contests

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University's Bailey Library will mark National Library Week, April 13-19, with a series of contests as part of the campaign's "Lives change @ your library" initiative.

The activities are open to faculty, staff, students and community members.

The library is accepting 100-word essays on the theme of how Bailey Library changed the writer's life.

Entries should include the writer's name, email address, phone number and/or Facebook/Twitter user name. Entries should be sent via email to: or dropped off in the contest box located in the library lobby.

After review, the top three entries will be posted on Facebook and Twitter where followers can vote for their favorite.

The winning entry will receive a bag of goodies donated by the SGA Bookstore. The runners-up will received a $5 SGA Bookstore Gift Card.

Submissions are due by noon, April 15, with the winner announced April 18.

Library Week opens with an "All You Can Read Book Buffet" filled with an array of authors, novels and "good reads" to be "read in or taken out." The buffet runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the library's lobby.

April 15 is designed as "Give us your two cents and we will give you ours" offering visitors the chance to describe what they like about the library, what needs changed and how the library is used.

A five-question survey will be available in the first floor library. Those who take the survey will receive "two cents."

Anne Slanina, associate professor of elementary education and early childhood development and author of the Annie Mouse series of children's family discussion books, will share her inspiration for the writing process and provide information about getting published at 7 p.m., April 15, in the Special Collections Room.

In the spirit of April being designated a Month of Movement at SRU, patrons will have the chance to demonstrate their moves during a 10 a.m. to noon and 1-3 p.m., April 16, "Hula Hoop Contest."

Participants can join any of three challenges, including an endurance hooping contest; a multiple hoops contest, requiring participants to spin multiple hoops from neck, arms, wrists, waist, etc.; or a hoop race with participants walking toward a line and back, while keeping their hula hoop in motion.

Prizes will be awarded on the spot.

Bailey Library will provide coffee and cookies beginning at 8 a.m., April 17 to round out the week.
