Penn Hills Hall of Fame votes in SRU PE graduate

Barbara Weisser, a 1971Slippery Rock University physical education graduate, will be among 10 new members inducted into the Penn Hills Sports Hall of Fame when it hosts its 2012 induction dinner and ceremony April 27 at the Churchill Valley Country Club in Pittsburgh.

The Penn Hills Progress reports Weisser's ties to the Penn Hills community began at age 5 when her family moved there from Point Breeze. She graduated from Divine Providence Academy in 1967 having played basketball all four years. Although she did not attend school at Penn Hills, the district played a significant role in her life.

While attending SRU, she was a two-year member of the women's basketball club, before a women’s team was formed. She played tennis during her final two years.

Weisser as hired as a teacher in the Penn Hills School District and taught physical education at the senior high school for 33 years. In 1972, she succeeded Jeanne Furrie, a 1945 SRU physical education graduate for whom the SRU Alumni Association hosts a scholarship, as the girls' varsity basketball head coach. Her teams amassed 11 winning records in 14 seasons with several players earning Division 1 scholarships.

During her career, Weisser, now retired, coached a number of all-star teams in post-season tournaments. She also coached the girls' varsity tennis team for five years.

She makes her home in Collier Township.
