LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Chris Warning, a Slippery Rock University men’s track and field standout from Monroeville, was named to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Winter Top 10 in a Wednesday release from the league office.
To be a candidate for the PSAC Top 10 Awards, a student-athlete must have achieved a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and must be a starter or key reserve with legitimate athletic credentials for their respective team. The winter sports eligible for consideration for the awards are men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and wrestling.
Warning earns his first PSAC Top 10 honor on the heels of his best indoor campaign, a season in which he was named the PSAC Male Field Athlete of the Year and the Most Outstanding Field Event Athlete at the PSAC Indoor Championships.
He claimed the individual conference title in the weight throw with 18.49 meters – more than a foot better than the second-place throw. He also broke the SRU record on three occasions in the event, topping off with an NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 18.67 meters.
He also placed second in the shot put at PSAC meet with toss of 15.44 meters – a career best, and earned first team All-PSAC and All-Region honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Warning is majoring in criminal justice and carries above a 3.65 grade-point average. He is having the best outdoor season of his career, leading the PSAC in the hammer and discus throws and ranking among the nation’s leaders in each event.
Warning joins Jen Harpp from the women’s cross country team as SRU student-athletes that have been named to PSAC Top 10 teams during the 2010-11 academic year. Harpp earned the honor in the fall.
SRU has had at least one student-athlete named to each of the last five Top 10 teams and has had at least one honoree on 14 of the last 15 Top 10 squads.
