SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University will open a Student Veterans' Center with a 10:30 a.m., April 24, ceremony providing SRU students who are veterans, veteran-dependents, active duty personnel, reserve and National Guard members, and ROTC cadets a place to gather, share information and relax.
The center is located in 253 Smith Student Center.
Cheryl Norton, SRU president, Buddy Clements, SGA president and John Beckage, president of the Student Veterans' Association at SRU will provide comments at the dedication.
"We certainly want our veterans and related military personnel to feel welcome and we realize they may need a space to share ideas and thoughts," said Norton. "This new center will give them an area to share with fellow veterans not only academic issues, but also any adjustment issues they may have in transitioning to college life. We hope the center will provide a community setting that allows veterans to raise awareness of veterans' issues and to ensure their success at SRU."
The SRU center is equipped with computers, a printer, cable-TV and lounge furniture the veterans can use to relaxation or to collaborate on academic programs.
SRU is also establishing private space in the McLachlan Student Health Center which will provide computers that can link veterans to the government sponsored Tele-Health system and Veterans Administration health benefits online.
