Technology Learning Center expands

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Slippery Rock University students interested in connecting their iPhone5 to Rockmail, needing assistance with video clips for class projects or adding a gradient background to essays and papers can get assistance at the University's Technology Learning Center in Bailey Library.

The center hosted a ribbon-cutting Thursday to mark its expansion, including new equipment and conference tables.

"Due to an influx of technology-related questions at the Reference Desk, the librarians at Bailey Library recognized the need for a place on campus that students could go to for technology resources and assistance," said Rita McClelland, library technician. "We created a Technology Learning Center Advisory Board and our pilot Technology Learning Center was opened in fall 2011."

"The purpose of the TLC is to increase students' technology skillset through peer-to-peer technology demonstrations directed by the TLC student specialists who are upper-level, highly qualified SRU students from the computer science, information technology and emerging technology departments. The TLC offers students current technology resources to help insure that SRU students are well-prepared for the future workplace," she said.

During its first year of operation, the advisory board determined an expansion was necessary to handle the volume of technology requirements and questions coming in, resulting in the additional space and equipment.

The center now offers three iMacs with dual monitors; six DELL computers with dual monitors; 11 DELL laptops computers for checkout; a 42-inch LCD used for informational display; a 54-inch LCD with cable for current events; an additional SMART Board; and an array of flexible seating arrangements. A T1 Collaborative Table will soon be added.

"As of April 12, 2013, the TLC student specialists had completed 1,450 work consultations since the center's opening," McClelland said.
