SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Nine Slippery Rock University students have been selected as recipients of the Meiping Cheng Memorial Scholarship and will receive between $1,500 and $3,000 for the 2013-14 academic year.
Scholarship recipients, their major and hometown, and their scholarship amount are:
Kimberly Bell, English, Slippery Rock, $3,000;
Jessica Yeager, early childhood development, Carnegie, $3,000;
Kortnee Koziara, biology, Strattanville, $2,000;
Kara Yasika, athletic training, Chicora, $2,000;
Emily Lobdell, early childhood development, Warren, $2,000;
Ashlee Moeller, psychology, Beaver Falls, $2,000;
Hailee Schlager, public health, Cincinnati, Ohio, $1,500;
Kara Werkmeister, secondary education, McDonald, $1,500; and
Nicole Krueger, exercise science, Phoenix, Ariz.,
The award honors Meiping Cheng, daughter of the late Madame Nien Chang, a longtime friend and supporter of Slippery Rock University.
Meiping Cheng, daughter of Kang-chi and Nien Cheng, was a promising actress when at age 24 she was murdered at the hands of Maoist revolutionaries because she refused to testify against her month.

Madame Cheng created the scholarship at SRU in the hope that her daughter's name would live in perpetuity as a reminder to all that freedom, justice and trust require constant vigilance.
