SRU football plays spring game today

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -The annual Slippery Rock University spring football game will be played at 7 p.m., today, at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The event marks the conclusion of The Rock's spring workouts. Admission is free.

The spring game will be played under an Offense vs. Defense format, with the offense wearing the white jerseys and being listed as the home team on the scoreboard. The game will consist of a maximum of 80 plays, 40 in each of the two halves of action.

There will be no kickoffs or kick returns and all punts will be received as fair catches. No game clock will be used, but a 40-second play clock will be in operation.

The green/defense will start the game with 14 points and can add points to its total by returning an interception or fumble for a touchdown or by recording a safety. An additional 14 points will be awarded to the green/defense at the start of the second half of action.

The white/offense will accumulate points in a normal manner, six points for a touchdown, three points for a field goal, two points for a two-point conversion and one-point for a successful extra-point kick.

The Rock opens its 2013 season with a noon, Sept. 7, road game at Northwood University (Midland, Mich.) before hosting Shippensburg in the 6 p.m. home opener Sept. 14.

SRU, under the guidance of 26-year head coach George Mihalik, will play five home games and six road games during its 2013 season.
