Pam Arnhold, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of physical education, has received the “Friends in Education Award” from the Midwestern Intermediate Unit 4. The award recognizes Arnhold’s leadership in preparing students for careers in adapted physical education and involvement with SRU’s adapted aquatics program.
Cel Yauger, executive director of the Midwestern Intermediate Unit 4, presented the award Wednesday at the unit’s convention in Grove City. The unit oversees special education in 27 school districts in Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.
Arhnold supervises weekly aquatics activity sessions for 25 community children with disabilities and two sections of adapted physical activity with 50 children. SRU students gain hands-on experience working with the children.
SRU is a leader in adapted physical activity, offering the only academic minor of its kind in Pennsylvania. The program teaches students to create and manage physical activity for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities.
Arnhold joined SRU in 1991.
