SRU sport management volunteers beautify downtown Butler

More than 100 Slippery Rock University student volunteers from the sport management department partnered with Butler Downtown and the Shade Tree Commission last Saturday for the city’s annual Spring Planting Project.

This is the second year SRU has been involved in the beautification project. Students covered Main Street and the Wayne Street Bridge to remove weeds, haul mulch and plant trees.

“This is a great project for our students. Through their sport management curriculum, students understand the importance of volunteerism and participating in the community, so we are glad to give them the opportunity to do so close to campus,” said Catriona Higgs, SRU sport management professor. Amanda Mikatavage, a sport management major from Reading, organized the student portion of the event.

Butler Downtown is a grassroots revitalization initiative that brings together local citizens and businesses to increase the quality of life and economic vitality of the downtown business district and the traditional neighborhoods in Butler.

Slippery Rock University is Pennsylvania's premier public residential university.
