SRU Alumni Association, SGA announce Michigan 'Big House' excursion plans

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University Alumni Association is organizing a series of travel packages for SRU alumni and friends and the SRU Student Government Association is organizing a daytrip for SRU students to The Big House - the University of Michigan's football stadium - for the Oct. 18 SRU vs. Mercyhurst football game.

The event helps mark SRU's yearlong 125th Anniversary celebration and the 35th anniversary of SRU's first visit to the iconic stadium when they took on Shippensburg. That game set the Division II attendance record of 61,143 fans, which still holds. Organizers of the upcoming game hope to break that record.

Since the late 1950s, Michigan has traditionally announced SRU football scores during breaks in the action at its home games. The announcement brings cheers from Michigan fans that support The Rock.

A number of travel options are available.

SRU's Student Government Association is organizing Oct. 18 gameday transportation for SRU students. Bus transportation will depart from the University Union arriving at the stadium in time for the 1 p.m. game, then return immediately following the event.

SRU students with proper ID will be admitted to the game free, whether traveling on the bus or via their own transportation.

Additional details, including departure times, concerning the SGA student trip will be released at the start of fall semester.

The association's overnight package includes round-trip bus transportation between SRU and Michigan and overnight accommodations Oct. 17 at the Holiday Inn near UM. The package also includes a 7 p.m. arrival welcome reception at the hotel with a pre-game talk by head coach George Mihalik, as well as gameday festivities, including a 10 a.m. SRU Alumni Association Tailgate at the University of Michigan Golf Course Club House and admission to the 1 p.m. game.

Busses will leave SRU at noon, Oct. 17, departing Ann Arbor at approximately 5 p.m., Oct. 18 following the game.

The package price is $375 for double occupancy; $250, single occupancy.

A $60 "Meet Us in Michigan Package" for those from the Michigan area or those handling their own transportation and accommodations is available. The package includes the 7 p.m., Oct. 17, welcome reception at the Holiday Inn - Ann Arbor and the same gameday festivities as those in the overnight package.

A $35 "Game Day Package," includes the tailgate and game admission ticket.
