SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Two Slippery Rock University's finance majors, Darrin Hyde from Springboro and Devin Sauers from Conway, have won the $1,000 prize in the annual Woodmen of the World Financial Planning Competition at SRU.
This year's competition included working from a financial planning case based around a couple in their 50s planning for retirement, but with three children planning to attend college. The overall objective of the competition was to build a financial plan/portfolio that would allow the fictional couple to be able to achieve their objectives and retire successfully. The plan could include: life insurance, budgeting/savings, putting three children through school, retirement and other factors.
The students, working in teams, were required to assemble an appropriate investment package that met the couple's needs.
Officers from Woodmen's home office in Omaha, Neb., visited campus along with representative of Woodman's Butler office to judge the eight competing teams.
This is the sixth year Woodman has sponsored the competition at SRU.
The company also hosted a dinner at Rachel's Roadhouse for all contestants.
The program is co-sponsored by Woodmen of the World, SRU's Sustainable Enterprise Accelerator and the SRU School of Business.
