Rocket's Mowrey wins national honors

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -Alex Mowrey, a Slippery Rock University communication major from Pittsburgh and a regional award-winning photographer for The Rocket,!-- Inline image no caption --> the campus newspaper, has now earned three national 2012 Mark of Excellence Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.<

First-place national winners will be acknowledged at the Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference Aug. 24-26 in Anaheim, Calif.

Mowrey scored the hat trick for his photos at the regional level, then had them judged first-place and national finalist award photos in the national competition.

Mowrey's first-place awards were for "A Son Remembered" in the Breaking News category and "The Catch," in the Sports category. He scored as a national finalist (top three) for his Country Must Be Country Wide" in the Feature Photography category.

"It is certainly gratifying to see our chief photo editor for the year earn such accolades," said Mark Zeltner, associate professor of communication and adviser to the newspaper. "His work has been outstanding. In fact, the entire staff is to be commended for their recent series of awards and honors. It has been a pleasure to work with these future journalists."

Founded in 1909, the Society of Professional Journalists works to improve and protect journalism. The organization is the nation's most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior.
