SRU’s alumni numbers approach 70,000 mark

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Today’s “Good News” is that Slippery Rock University will send some 1,635 new graduates into the world tomorrow prepared to tackle – and solve – its future problems.

The new graduates, part of SRU’s 125th Anniversary celebration class, bring SRU’s graduate count since its 1889 founding to near the 70,000 mark.

SRU will host two ceremonies in Morrow Field House: The 10:30 a.m. ceremony, will see nearly 865 diplomas presented to those graduating from the University's graduate programs, including 50 students who will receive the doctor of physical therapy degree, along with 120 graduates from the College of Humanities, Fine and Performing Arts, and 520 graduates from the College of Health, Environment and Science.

Tom Sparrow, an SRU philosophy instructor and this year's recipient of the President's Award for Scholarly and Creative Achievement, will be the speaker.

The 2 p.m. ceremony will see 760 diplomas awarded, including 525 to graduates from the College of Business, Information and Social Sciences, and 235 to graduates from the College of Education.

Bruce Orvis, associate professor in SRU's School of Business and this year's recipient of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, will be the speaker

Both Sparrow and Orvis were honored at SRU's annual Academic Honors Convocation.

Cheryl Norton, SRU president, will preside and offer opening remarks at both ceremonies. Wilma Cavil, assistant professor of health and safety management and senior member of the University faculty, will serve as grand marshal.

Tickets, which have been distributed to all graduating seniors, are required for admission to either ceremony. The events will be live-streamed from http://www.sru.edu, beginning a few minutes before the appointed time. Overflow seating with large-screen viewing will be available in the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center and the Advanced Technology and Science Hall with no tickets required.
