SRU’S Holtz captures CoSIDA District II writing award

Jonathan Holtz, Slippery Rock University assistant sports information director, was awarded first place in the College Sports Information Directors of America District 2 feature-writing competition. Holtz won the annual Fred S. Stabley Sr. Writing Contest for his entry “Feat on her Feet,” that was published in The Rock magazine.

The 2011 writing contest drew 159 entries with the “Athlete Profile” category leading the way with 47 entries.

Holtz, who joined the University in 2009, will be recognized June 29, at the CoSIDA Annual Convention in Marco Island, Fla.

Holtz’s story, which tells of SRU alumna Vicki Becker’s feat of running a marathon in all 50 states – before reaching age 50 – includes Becker’s positive attitude toward her alma mater where she first discovered her running abilities. Becker is a 1982 computer science graduate.

The full story, which was included in the fall 2010 SRU magazine, is available at: http://www.sru.edu/PublicRelations/Documents/RockMag/ROCK%20magazine%20Fall%202010.pdf. (Pages 32-33.)

Other District 2 award winners are Craig Sachson, Jerry Price and Cass Cliatt at Princeton University; Tom McGuire at Bloomsburg University; and Tim Goodenow at Virginia University.

The late Fred Stabley Sr., for whom the contest is named, was the sports information director at Michigan State University.
