SRU graduate captures Distinguished Alumni Award

Mary Beth Bedeck Jenkins, a 1993 Slippery Rock University communication graduate and a 1989 graduate of North Hills Senior High School, is among those named to receive Pittsburgh’s North Hills School District Distinguished Alumni Award.

The honor was presented earlier this month as part of the high school’s awards ceremony.

Jenkins is senior vice president and chief operating officer for UPMC Health, where she has been employed for nearly 15 years, according to the North Hills Patch, which wrote she is “responsible for the development of strategic and operational initiatives for the multi-billion dollar family of companies that provides health benefits management and health related administrative services for more than 1 million Pennsylvania residents. Under her leadership, UPMC Health Plan’s Member Service call center received the J.D. Power & Associates Certified Call Center distinction — one of only 31 companies in the country to earn certification.”

Jenkins is active in the greater Pittsburgh community and serves on several boards of directors and/or committees, including board chair of March of Dimes, Carlow University board of trustees, board member Leadership Pittsburgh and the United Way Women’s Leadership Council. She is also a volunteer tutor at Shaffer Elementary School in the Pittsburgh Public School District.

In addition to her SRU degree, Jenkins earned a master’s degree in business administration from Duquesne University.

She was cited for her pride in the school district and for her professional and personal accomplishments that demonstrate the value of hard work and dedication.

The school’s board of education established the award in 2010. To qualify, a nominee must be a North Hills Senior High School, or a former West View High School, alumni who graduated at least 10 years ago.

A Distinguished Alumni wall, honoring each inductee, is located in the high school lobby.
