LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –Kevin Jewel, a Slippery Rock University physical education major and track and field standout from North Versailles, has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Male Track Athlete of the Year in voting by the league's coaches. Earlier Jewel had been named to the PSAC Spring Top 10.
In order to be eligible for the PSAC Top 10, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade point average above 3.50, while also contributing athletically.
Jewel won his third individual outdoor PSAC title in the 800-meters and also anchored the PSAC champion and SRU record 4x800-meter relay at the league meet. His highlight of the year came at the NCAA Division II National Championships, in his final track race in a SRU uniform. Jewel took runner-up honors with a second-place finish in the 800-meter final in a PSAC all-time record of 1:49.09, which was converted to 1:48.51 due to the altitude in Colorado.
Jewel broke the SRU record in the 800m three times during the season, all with NCAA automatic qualifying marks under the elusive 1:50 mark. He ran 1:49.86 to break the record early in the season at the Raleigh Relays and then broke his own record with a 1:49.82 later in the spring at the Ashland Alumni Invitational before breaking it again at the national meet.
On top of his outstanding season on the track, Jewel also increased his GPA and was honored as a first team Capital One Academic All-District selection. He is on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors.
Jewel is the second SRU student-athlete to be named to the PSAC Top 10 for 2012-13, joining Kara Styles, who was named to the women's team after the fall cross country season. The Rock has had at least one student-athlete named to PSAC Top 10 honors in every academic year since the award was introduced in 1997.
