SRU ‘LEEDS’ way in green construction

Slippery Rock University has demonstrated commitment to green building design in both new construction and renovation of older buildings. The Pittsburgh Business Times has recognized the University’s accomplishments by citing SRU’s student housing buildings A-F as the fifth largest LEED-certified project in the Pittsburgh area.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. LEED certifies successful green building design, construction and operations.

The newspaper posted its top 25 LEED-certified projects in its June 22 edition and noted that SRU’s six-building, student housing complex is 742,834 square feet.

Topping the list was the David L. Lawrence Convention Center at 1,486,000 square feet; followed by the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Clinical Services Building at 1,100,000; the Westinghouse Electric Co. Corporate Headquarters at 775,000; Three PNC Plaza at 750,000, and SRU’s student housing.

The SRU Foundation Inc.’s residential suites, where more than 2,100 students live in a variety of room configurations, include many green features. They were designed to maximize natural lighting. Motion sensor lighting throughout the halls reduces electricity consumption and individually controlled room air-conditioning and heating net additional savings.

SRU has received institutionwide recognition for its greening initiatives. The Princeton Review has included the University in its “Guide to 286 Green Colleges,” three consecutive years, noting SRU is one of the most environmentally responsible campuses in the nation.

The Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods, a regional education facility that SRU conceived and administers, is LEED certified as well.

The University is a member of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment.
