SRU academic success ranks among PSAC’s best

Slippery Rock University ranks among the best institutions in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in terms of student-athlete's academic success, according to recent reports released by the league office.

The Rock's student-athletes combined to post a 3.139 cumulative grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year, which ranks as the fourth-best in the 16-team PSAC and second-best among the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education schools.

The PSAC began compiling team GPAs and awarding the highest GPA in each sport with the PSAC Team GPA Award last year.

For the second consecutive year, SRU won the field hockey honor with the highest GPA in the league at 3.470, which was also the second-highest team GPA of all Division II field hockey teams.

Thirteen of SRU’s 17 teams (indoor and outdoor track and field are combined in the report) have a cumulative GPA above 3.0 and eight Rock teams have a collective GPA that ranks in the top-five among all schools in the PSAC.

The women's lacrosse team (3.301) and men's track and field teams (3.227) have the second-best GPAs in the league, while the football team (2.780) and men's cross country team (3.321) have the third-best marks in the conference. The SRU baseball team (3.0) has the fourth highest GPA in the league and the women's tennis (3.386) and women's track and field (3.305) teams have the fifth-best marks.

In addition to the teams’ academic success, 195 SRU student-athletes were named to PSAC Scholar-Athlete honors for earning a cumulative GPA above 3.25. That total equates to 46 percent of all SRU student-athletes, the third highest percentage of all PSAC schools and first among the 14 PASSHE schools, trailing only Gannon (48 percent) and Mercyhurst (47 percent).

SRU also ranked third among all PSAC institutions in the total number of student-athletes honored (195), the number of female student-athletes honored (122) and the number of male student-athletes honored (73).

The PSAC had a record year with 2,200 student-athletes from its 16 member institutions earning the scholar-athlete honor.

Paul Lueken, SRU athletic director, congratulated the coaches and players for their work on the field and in the classroom saying it was “a job well done by all.”
