SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Itzi Meztli, Slippery Rock University assistant professor of English, can now also be called “Councilman Itzi Meztli,” after being elected by the Slippery Rock Borough council to fill a vacancy.
Meztli, who joined the SRU faculty in 2003, was named a council member July 5, replacing Jim Green who died June 6.
Meztli will fill the post until Dec. 31 finishing Green’s term. He has said he is seeking the four-year term in the November election, running on both the Democratic and Republic party tickets.
Reached earlier this week in Texas, where he is visiting family, Meztli said he planned to use his current time on the council to better understand its inner workings. “I want to see how things work, and how we can make things happen,” he said. “Before being named to the vacancy, I had decided to run for the position, so I entered as a write-in candidate on both party tickets and was successful on both.”
The candidate elected in November takes office Jan. 1.
The new councilman told the Butler Eagle he wanted to work with Slippery Rock University and businesses to spur development. “I think government should work for people,” he told the newspaper.
