SRU student, graduate, show ‘Spirit of Gettysburg’ talent

Two runners with Slippery Rock University cross country team connections took top honors in the recent 21st annual Spirit of Gettysburg 5K race.

Michael Beegle, an SRU physical therapy major from Gettysburg and a member of the SRU cross country team, placed first in his age division and sixth overall with a time of 16:14. May exercise science graduate Crystal Burnick of Collegeville, a former SRU cross country runner, was the top female finisher and 14th overall. The run was Burnick’s third participation; Beegle’s first.

Nearly 800 runners turned out for the event, which loops the northwestern side of the historic town, according to an online story from the Gettysburg Times.

The combination of monuments, wheat fields and the rolling hills in the distance makes the Spirit a unique race. Racers from 17 states, including California and Utah, and Washington, D.C., participated.
