DeShurko earns Campus Recreation’s McFarland Award

Allyson DeShurko, a resort, recreation management and tourism major from Dayton, Ohio, has been presented the 2010-2011 Dr. James "Gym" McFarland Award.

The award honors the late James McFarland who served SRU from 1974-2001 as a professor of parks and recreation, men's and women's tennis coach and as Campus Recreation's first intramural sports coordinator. He was inducted into SRU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.

Criteria for the award is based on the recipient exhibiting the leadership, participation, enthusiasm and teamwork characteristics for which McFarland was known.

DeShurko, who has worked as an office assistant and Welcome Center monitor at the Robert N. Aebersold Student Recreation Center since the fall of 2009, was recognized as a Campus Recreation monthly All Star in November 2009. She participated in a variety of campus recreation activities especially intramural sports, was a recognized peer leader and mentor to many and displayed great enthusiasm.

McFarland served as a mentor to many of the original members of SRU’s Campus Recreation team.
