Rock sets school record for PSAC Scholar-Athletes

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –Setting a school-record, 48 percent of Slippery Rock University student-athletes earned Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete status during the 2011-12 academic year, according to numbers released last week by the conference office.

A total of 206 Rock student-athletes finished the academic year with a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

The Rock ranked third among the 16 PSAC institutions in the total number of student-athletes honored behind Mercyhurst University (236) and West Chester University (207). SRU led the conference in percentage of student-athletes honored. Gannon University was second with 46 percent, followed by Mercyhurst at 42 percent.

The Rock's 2011-12 numbers improved 7 percent and 34 student-athletes compared to previous-year marks of 41 percent and 172. The 2010-11 marks ranked second and third, respectively, among conference-member schools.

“We are extremely proud to be among the conference leaders in student-athletes honored,” said Paul Lueken, SRU director of athletics. “It is another testament to the quality of student-athletes our coaches are recruiting to play for The Rock and an endorsement of the Academic Advisement Assistance Program coordinated by Matt Meredith.”

“Along with our fourth-place finish in the Dixon Trophy all-sports competition,” Lueken added, “our strong showing in the Scholar-Athlete competition attests to the fact universities can attract quality student-athletes to their athletic programs without sacrificing the quality of those programs.”

The 2011-12 academic year marked the eighth consecutive year in which SRU ranked either first or second among the conference institutions in the percentage of student-athletes who attained PSAC Scholar-Athlete status. The Rock led the conference in both 2006-07 and 2007-08.
