Spring commencement comes early

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has good news for next spring's graduating seniors: You are getting out a week earlier than originally planned.

SRU's spring commencements will now be at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., May 10, in Morrow Field House.

In a memo from Michael Mottola, assistant vice chancellor of labor relations in the PASSHE office, a number of academic calendar adjustments for the 2013-14 academic year were listed:

Fall semester's opening days remains Aug. 26, but spring semester 2014 classes will begin Jan. 21, a week earlier than originally planned. The early start will mean there are regular classes May 5, with final exams week running May 6-10.

The break between winter and spring semesters will remain five week long, allowing adequate time for winter session courses.

Spring break, March 17-22, remains unchanged on the new calendar.

"We are urging all of those who are planning to graduate to be aware of the new commencement date and to advise their family and friends who may be planning to attend and may have heard or seen the previous date," said Rita Abent, executive director of University public relations and commencement coordinator.
