Chronicle of Education declares SRU ‘Great Place to Work’

It’s official: Slippery Rock University remains a “Great Place to Work.” For the third consecutive year, SRU has received the workplace designation from the Chronicle of Education.

‘Slippery Rock University has been selected as one of The Chronicle's 2011 Great Colleges to Work For,” wrote Jeffrey Selingo, editor of the publication in a letter to SRU President Robert Smith. “Given how competitive the Great Colleges program was this year, this accolade is a remarkable accomplishment.”

SRU was awarded special recognition in the “Collaborative Governance” and “Compensation and Benefits” categories.

“This is an honor our faculty and staff deserve and benefits our students,” Smith said. “The camaraderie, team spirit, collaborative effort and genuine friendliness of our campus are apparent to those who work here – and equally apparent to those who visit. This award is a way of sharing with outsiders the rock solid quality of SRU and how the individual is important.”

The Chronicle’s annual report on The Academic Workplace is based on surveys of nearly 44,000 employees at 310 colleges and universities nationwide. Only 111 of the 310 participating institutions achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium (SRU) and large institutions.

Selingo said the annual report is used to show Chronicle readers which colleges are being innovative in their workplace practices. “Just like colleges market to recruit students, they are now realizing they need to do more to attract quality employees. The Great Colleges to Work For survey is meant to help both employers and potential employees by giving them vital information about workplaces,” he said.

The Chronicle, a national source of news about colleges and universities and headquartered in Washington, D.C., worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs.
