When the College Board’s Advanced Placement Reading Program needed educators to evaluate and score high school AP exams in history, it turned to three members of the Slippery Rock University history department.
Carlis White and Eric Tuton, assistant professors of history, were part of a larger group of educators from around the world who were hired to read and score the AP test in world history. Aaron Cowan, assistant professor of history, reviewed the U.S. history test.
“The reading draws upon the talents of some of the finest teachers and professors the world has to offer,” said Trevor Packer, senior vice president for the College Board.
The AP program enables academically prepared high school students to earn college credits while still in high school. White said SRU accepts test scores of four or better for credit.
The test evaluation process brought high school teachers and college professors together at various locations in the U.S. to read the AP tests. White and Tuton did their work in Salt Lake City, while Cowan traveled to Louisville.
“High school students across the country take standardized tests within specific subject areas to demonstrate their proficiency in a subject that they could then transfer into college credit at most colleges/universities across the country,” White said. “The College Board creates the tests and then hires professionals from around the country to engage in scoring the thousands of tests that are submitted.”
The College Board is a non-profit organization that creates AP tests and partners with schools and educators to provide educational opportunities.
