Slippery Rock University University Police are hosting a multi-day “Police and Public Safety Seminar Incident Command” training session, including model city table-top exercises and active shooter, force-on-force tactical entry hands on field exercises.
News reporters/photographers are invited to follow portions of the sessions. The best action is expected between 1:30 and 3 p.m., today, Thursday and Friday.
Those interested in staffing any part of the training are asked to call 724.738.2199 to make arrangements.
The sessions involve SRU police officers as well nearly 40 others from police departments in cities, boroughs, townships and other universities across Pennsylvania.
The table-top exercises will be offers in the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center; tactical entry exercises will be in SRU’s Kraus Hall on Main Street. (The now empty building is a former residence hall.) Officers will use air-soft recoil pistols, M4 rifles and shotguns as part of the training.
The project is funded through a grant from the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency. It is taught by staff at Command Excellence, LLC., based in McDonald, Pa.
“This is an excellent opportunity for police officers to receive hands on, useful training that could be very important should they encounter an incident like this week’s Sikh temple attack in Wisconsin or the recent movie theatre shooting in Aurora, Colo. We hate to admit that in today’s world there is always a chance for a similar incident in our region, and we just have to work to be prepared,” said Michael Simmons, chief of SRU’s police.
Among the topics covered will be: establishing command and control; identifying the kill or danger zone; establishing the inner and outer perimeters; establishing a command post; establishing staging areas; identifying and requesting additional resources; and making notifications.
