SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –Slippery Rock University’s Center for Student Involvement and Leadership and leaders from more than 30 campus organizations will join forces to welcome new freshman in a program emphasizing both mentoring and service to the community.
The 10 a.m. to noon, Aug. 26 “Polish the Rock” program will include a campus and community clean-up.
“The idea is to have leaders from the various organizations on campus ‘team’ with a freshman and become ‘volunteer buddies.’ We hope this program provides a great opportunity to introduce new freshman to volunteerism and student engagement in the community,” said Laurel Dagnon, CSIL program director.
“Throughout their four years on campus, students are often required to be involved in community service programming as part of their course work, but often are without a true understanding of what their efforts can mean to a local community. With Polish the Rock we hope they see instant results and get great satisfaction,” she said.
As a bonus, volunteers will receive a limited edition “CSIL Rises…The Legend Begins” T-shirt.
“The service component and the mentoring connection of the program allows freshman to work side-by-side with an older classmate while developing a friendship that otherwise might take months to establish,” Dagnon said.
“The program will provide opportunities for an instant big brother/big sister/friend who you can talk with and that makes life a lot easier for a new person on campus. That is one of the primary goals of this new program,” she said.
More than 200 students and staff will be involved in the initial “Polish the Rock” program.
Additional campus/community activities are planned for Sept. 16, following the Slippery Rock VillageFest, and Sept. 29, as part of the inauguration of Cheryl Norton as SRU’s 16th president.
