SRU opens first university-based Quaker Steak & Lube

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The first Quaker Steak & Lube restaurant on a university campus opened in Slippery Rock University’s new Robert M. Smith Student Center earlier this week.

The new facility, which features award-winning casual dining in the 105,000-square-foot center’s food court commons area, offers the restaurant’s Best Wings USA and more than 20 sauce varieties along with its traditional menu of burgers and fries. There are 10 other QS&L franchise operations in Pennsylvania.

The restaurant, part of Rocky’s on the center’s second floor, is open to the public as well as students, faculty and staff.

“We are so excited to be coming to Slippery Rock University as our fist college campus location. We are thrilled to bring the Rock’s students Best Wings USA and welcome them to Lube Nation,” said John Longstreet, QS&L chief executive officer.

“The campus community is excited to have Quaker Steak & Lube open their first campus-based operation at Slippery Rock University. When the new center was developed, one of the things we heard from students time and again was ‘we want Quaker Steak & Lube.’ We think it’s a perfect complement to our other outstanding food venues,” said Rita Agent, executive director of SRU’s University Public Relations Office.

The restaurant will be open 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday. On- and off-campus student housing delivery will run 4-11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday and 4-9 p.m., Friday and Saturday.

The new $38-million student center also includes a Starbucks on the ground floor and AVI Fresh, the University’s contract food vendor, operations as part of the food commons area.

QS&L officials said weekly events such as 60-Cent Breaded Boneless Thursdays, Going Green Bike Nite, wing eating contests and other promotions are planned.

Quaker Steak will also offer concessions during home SRU football games and other select events at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Call-ahead orders will be accepted and delivery and catering will be available.

SRU students will be permitted to use Flex, cash, credit and Rock Dollars for non-delivery orders.

QS&L was founded in 1974 in an abandoned gas station in near-by Sharon. The chain now boasts some 40 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Its wings were recently named Festival Favorite at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, N.Y.
