SRU women’s, men’s track/field teams earn all-academic honors

NEW ORLEANS – The Slippery Rock University women’s and men’s track and field programs have earned U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team honors.

The accolade is the third consecutive for the women’s program, which ranked 11th in Division II in 2010 with a 3.21 grade point average. The SRU men’s program ranked second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference and 18th in NCAA Division II with a team-GPA of 3.12.

In order to be eligible for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the collective GPA of all student-athletes on the roster must be at or above 3.0. A total of 74 women’s teams and 39 men’s teams reached the mark during the 2010-11 academic year.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference led all NCAA Division II conferences with 12 teams being awarded All-Academic status while six other conferences tied for second with seven teams earning the honor.

Last week, 11 individuals on the SRU women’s track and field team and five members of the men’s team earned All-Academic honors for earning above a 3.25 or higher cumulative GPA and reaching NCAA qualifying standards in at least one event.
